Below Range Attacks

Definition:
The act of taking any aggressive action toward someone BR to you is illegal.

Exceptions:
Provocation and self-defense:
You may defend yourself when attacked by a BR person. You may also attack a BR person under circumstances of EXTREME provocation. Examples include relentless verbal harassment over a period of days, interference with a combat you are involved in OTHER than pushing or dragging your opponent, any action that would start a fight automatically, and stealing or attempting to steal from you. If a BR person interferes with a combat you are involved in, you may only attack them until their fight lag wears off (ie: They can quit or cannot be pushed/dragged from safe).

The assisting of guild members:
An ESTABLISHED guild run by an immortal can come to the aid of a BR guild member who is being attacked. Within fight lag of the BR guild member being attacked, all members may protect and hunt the person whom attacked. This only applies of the BR member did NOT initiate the combat.

The assisting of group members:
You may assist BR group members who are being attacked by someone BR to you. Autoassist and the casting of spells which would not prevent the fleeing of the attacker (IE: no bash etc. no blind, curse, etc.) are acceptable terms of assisting. They may be pursued until they are out of fight lag. This only applies if the BR member did NOT initiate the combat.

Attacking "up":
If a BR intentionally attacks someone AR to them, they essentially lose all protections afforded to BR characters. They are open to attack, subject to the same laws as if they were IR, by those they attack, their friends, family, guild-members, etc. as if they were IR. The only way to escape from this situation is to appeal to Vermillion for a restoration of BR protection under the law or for an adjudication that the original attack was accidental or otherwise justified. Only a Vermillion immortal or mortal leader may restore these rights.

Punishment:
Vermillion will hunt you. All Vermillion will be free to attack and knock you out. The standard loot for an attack that does not result in a knockout is 5 items. The standard loot for a person whom is knocked out will be 10 items.

If a Brawler attacks a BR non-Brawler they can expect to face extreme punishment, including jail time.

Be aware that flagrant BR attacks may be handled by Immortals and any use of the above exceptions had better be held above board.

If you want to be absolutely sure that provocation by a BR is sufficient to justify attacking him without causing a problem with Vermillion, you should apply to Vermillion for "OOL rights". This right may be granted by a Vermillion IMM or by the Vermillion mortal leader. If you attack someone who is BR and provoking you WITHOUT OOL rights, you are taking your chances that Vermillion will find the provocation sufficient to justify the attack.

OOC: For lack of a better place to put it, I want to mention here that race-hater based attacks are not allowed on BRs. (Some char's "role" includes hatred of a particular race.) Such attacks will be handled by IMM

Murder

Definition:
Murder is defined as any action which is the proximate cause of a character's death, not counting criminal executions as provided for in the law.

Examples:
use of the murder command, using charmed entities in combat resulting in a character's death, pushing or summoning someone into a room occupied by an aggressive creature, moving aggressive creatures from their home resulting in a character's death, etc.

Punishment:
You will be knocked unconscious and summarily executed. Any equipment recovered from your corpse will be used to compensate your victim and to equip the members of Vermillion. Punishment for your crime may be levied using ANY means necessary, including brand and jail.

Exception:
Charmed creatures used in self-defense. If a charmed creature is used to defend against attack and the aggressor is killed, no murder has occurred.

NOTE: Submission by criminals will not be allowed for the crime of murder.

Stealing

Definition:
The act of taking items that do not belong to you is legal unless it happens within the town walls. Stealing in the city is considered a crime. Attempted stealing within the town walls (failed steal command) is also a crime. Looting in town is legal if the KO was legal.

Punishment:
A hefty fine as well as the return of stolen items. Habitual in town stealing will bump criminal up a level and jail and brand will be used.

The town of Arinock is defined as Arinock Proper including the Dark Moon Academey. IE: If you can see Kalane or Adept with where, you're in Arinock.

Kill Stealing:
The act of killing a creature (not a character) that someone is already in the process of attacking, or looting equipment from a creature you did not kill, is illegal.

NOTE: Rogues are not allowed entry into Arinock due to past lawlessness and bank robberies. Vermillion will attack any rogue found within the city limits (IR only). Gateguards have been given orders to attack any rogues on sight (level 40 or over).

False Claims

Definition:
Falsely accusing someone of a crime or bearing false witness to an officer of Vermillion is illegal.

Punishment:
A hefty fine which will be determined by an Officer or Judge. All future claimes from you will be considered highly suspect and you can expect little help from Vermillion in the future. Should youcontinue to falsify information, the fine will be surpassed and you will be knocked out and looted of five(5) items.

Charm

Charmed Monsters are the responsibility of the Charmer.

A person whom charms a monster will be held responsible for all actions of the charmed mob until it is returned to it's home area. Any murdering by such monster will be known as a murder by the owner. See Murder for more information.

Knock Outs

Definition:
The act of fighting in town is NOT considered illegal. The act of knocking someone out in town IS ILLEGAL if you were the aggressor in the fight. Brawlers KOing other Brawlers in town is currently exempted from the laws but a Brawler looting another Brawler in town is still considered in-town theft and subject to enforcement. Punishment:
For a KO in town with no loot, you will be knocked unconscious. Any weapons on your person and 3 other items will be taken.

For a KO in town with loot, you will be knocked unconscious and as much looted from you as possible. Items will be returned to the victim if practical.

'In town' is defined as Arinock Proper including the Dark Moon Academy. IE: If you can see Kalane or Adept with where, you're in Arinock.

Habitual Criminals

The following details how career criminals, mass murderers and the criminally insane will be handled until further notice.

Wanted Levels

Lvl 1 - Convict is wanted for less than 3 crimes. Punishment as stated in 'help laws' for the crime.

Lvl 2 - Convict is wanted for 3 crimes or more or has more than 1 OOL attack or OOL KO or has been convicted of murder. Punishment is execution (death) by Vemillion mortals, using any means including brand/jail plus full loot. Convict may also be jailed for 24 hours.

Lvl 3 - Convict has been at Lvl 2 for a while and continues to commit crimes, thereby becoming a HABITUAL CRIMINAL. Punishment is same as Lvl 2 but they are removed from all protections under the law and may be jailed for a long time.

Lvl 4 - Convict has been at Lvl 3 for a while without any positive result, is OOLing often, has committed 3 or more murders, or other exceptional circumstances. Punishment is same as Lvl 3 but Vermillion IMMs are allowed to join the hunt but may use no IMM commands except goto. All Vermillion of all levels may attack the convict.

Level of the criminal's wanted status past Lvl 2 will only be set by a Vermillion IMM. Time between Lvls and time spent in jail will vary according to circumstance
