Character Crossing

Character Crossing - Frequently Asked Questions

There's no victim to character crossing, so what's the big deal?
Character crossing is a big deal because there ARE victims - in grievous cases such as when items, gold, or information are "crossed" to help a character who may become involved in PK against someone else, the char crosser essentially is cheating to get an edge over someone he wants to attack, and this is absolutely unacceptable. In cases where PK characters are not involved, character crossing still cheats other players who choose to play by the rules and not cheat to get the inside scoop or easy money/equipment, and it deprives others of possibly becoming involved in your character's ongoing story. Cheating is just really not fair to others.

I made sure there was an IC reason for everything I did for my friend's character, so how am I character crossing?
An IC reason can be rationalized for anything, and the immortal staff knows this. If you know deep down that your actions in-game were motivated or prompted by OOC things, you should also know to yourself that you are character crossing. You may think you can talk your way out of it or that the imms don't have a case against you, but we all have brains and act accordingly. The best way to not get accused of character crossing is by truly playing fair, not simply trying to make it look like you are.

If someone starts talking to one of my characters about one of my alts, what should I do to avoid crossing character?
If the person who is referring to your alts doesn't know that you and your alt are played by the same person, then the best thing to do is simply get out of the situation as best you can. If someone asks you if you've ever met someone who happens to be your alt, simply saying "No, I've never heard of " or "I don't think I've ever seen him before" is a perfectly acceptable response. Conversely, a response that would get you into trouble would be something like "Oh, is my best friend!" However, if the person who is referring to your alts DOES know that he is referring to your other character, see the question below.

What should I do if someone insists on befriending all of my new characters? What should I do if someone keeps making new characters to befriend me? What if all of someone's characters want to kill my character?
This is a very tough spot to be in, and there are several choices. If you happen to know the person OOCly and feel comfortable approaching them about it, you have every right to ask them to stop character crossing you. If you don't feel comfortable talking to them about it OOCly, please report it to the immortals. This is the worst part of character crossing, and it is something we simply do not stand for here at Dark Risings. Such cases will be handled very seriously.

Everyone else does it, so why am I getting in trouble for it?
Because you got caught breaking the rules. Please report any instances of character crossing you see. We WILL look into all accusations.

I'm not character crossing according to my definition of it. Why am I getting in trouble for it?
The immortal staff of Dark Risings enforces the rules according to how we interpret them. If you think your definition is different than ours, or if you are unsure if something would be acceptable or not, ASK!

Okay, so I still want to cross character. What's the worst that can happen?
Of the people who get "banned for life," about half of them were asked not to play here because of issues that stemmed from serious character crossing on their part. However, we understand that exactly what is and isn't character crossing can be difficult to determine, and we would much, much rather sit down with players and help them improve than just slay and ban everyone. With that being said, players who purposely cross character or do not play fair are subject to the full array of immortal sanctions.
